Describe a time when you made a promise to someone.

You should say:

·         when it was

·         who you made the promise to

·         why you made this promise

and explain how you felt about it.

I am Muhammad Qasim. Today, for this topic, I'd like to talk about a promise that I made to myself, and that I also broke just a couple of weeks later.

It was 2019 when I'd just finished my M. Phil, and was looking for a job. The shift from comparatively relaxed student life, the pressure to land a job, my financial condition and large debt - all mounted an invisible pressure on my shoulder. Moreover, disrupting sleep pattern and a change in weather affected my mood to a great extent. I found myself in a situation where I was losing my temper pretty quickly, which is contrary to my usual self. In fact, I was known to have a great composure and nerve.

So, one day, after losing temper and getting angry for no apparent reason and shouting to a taxi driver, who I thought was arguing unnecessarily, I realised something had changed in me which I did not expect and like at all. On that very day, I made a promise to myself that I would behave more prudently and never let my temper take control of me.

I made this promise to myself because I never liked hot-tempered persons who get angry without valid reasons. I always believed such people could do a little better by being a bit wiser and less bitter. So naturally, I didn't want to become one of those persons.

When I made the promise, I felt great. It was like re-inventing myself and being able to erase something bad from my life. But it was equally disappointing when I got angry with my little sister a couple of weeks later forgetting my promise. Some say promises are made to break, but it's a good thing that I constantly remind myself that I need to keep my promises, and even if I break it once or twice, there is no reason why I should not try harder.

Describe a famous business person that you know about.

You should say:

·         who this person is

·         what kind of business this person is involved in

·         what you know about this business person

and explain what you think of this business person.

There are many great and successful business persons in my country of national prominence who have made a great stride in moving the economy forward. One such person is popularly known “Mr H. Rahman”, and today, I would like to talk about him.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to suggest that Mr H. Rahman is the pioneer of all kinds of modern furniture in my country who actually started his journey about 50 years ago by starting a timber industry. But, back in 50 years, running and managing a timber industry wasn’t exactly a matter of joke, especially for a person with little capital and assets. However, Mr Rahman managed to do a very superb job of that by virtually bringing the entire country under his supply chain – supplies of timber, logs, and other types of primary/secondary wood products.

And, he didn’t stop at that as he soon put his eyes on making furniture – affordable furniture of great quality – both for household and office needs. Today, with more than 25% market share of furniture products of my country, Mr Rahman can certainly claim himself to be the most famous and successful businessman of his country since there is hardly any single household in my country who doesn’t know about the furniture brand, made my Mr Rahman’s company.

I have known a great deal about this visionary business leader of my country, but what impresses me the most about him is that he still works 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day, just like a regular person. Happily married with 5 children, Mr Rahman lives a rather simple life for such a rich and successful person.

Anyway, to conclude, I think that Mr Rahman is indeed a very hard working person who is passionate about his works and business, otherwise, he wouldn’t really be able to come up with such beautiful furniture. I also think that Mr Rahman can teach a lot to the arising entrepreneurs of his country about how to develop a business from scratch.

Describe a website that you bought something from.

You should say:

·         what the website is

·         what you bought from this website

·         how satisfied you were with what you bought

and explain what you liked or disliked about using this website.

No doubt, there are so many sophisticated eCommerce websites on the internet, but choosing one of them can be a bit tricky since we would never know if they are really that much reliable or trustworthy except, of course, we are talking about amazon.com.

Now, I think that there are very few people, using the internet to buy things, who don’t know about Amazon eCommerce website. But, still, to repeat, it is the world’s largest online retailer, manufacturer of electronic book readers and web service provider that has become the iconic example of electronic commerce industry all over the world.

Being founded in the year of 1994, amazon.com has actually revolutionized the way the business is done on the internet by incorporating the latest technologies on its website to the best possible effects. And I realized this, again, when I went to buy an E-book reader from their website about a few months ago for my 14 years old cousin.

By the way, the E-book reader, I bought, is the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, which probably is the right choice for all kinds of users. And it didn’t even cost me that much money even though this sharp 6-inch device is packed with 8 GB of storage and 300-PPI backlit display. So, in the end, it was quite a deal for me, as I didn’t have to look anywhere else for what I was exactly looking for. But, the best thing was that it probably took me only about 5 to 7 minutes to finish the whole process of finding my E-book reader and the paying for it.

Well, what I really liked about amazon.com was that the website actually allows its customers to personalize and filter the product information based on the customers' taste and preferences. Besides, I was very impressed with the way the website managed to organize its navigational features. It was designed and built in such a simplified manner (especially, for such a “gigantic” online retailer) that the customers don’t feel lost when searching for their products.

Describe a weekend that you enjoyed and still remember.

You should say:

·         when it was

·         what you did during this weekend

·         how much you enjoyed it

and explain why you still remember it.

Weekends usually are reserved for some relaxation and fun. But, unfortunately, my weekends aren’t exactly like this since I have to work during the weekends also, most of the times. But, luckily, I got a rare free weekend about a few months ago when I really enjoyed my time.

But, before I tell you what I really did during that weekend, or how much I relished it, let me first tell you how I really had managed to get that free weekend, even though, I was very much scheduled to work during that weekend. But, things got little interesting when I received a call from one of my co-workers, just the evening before the weekend, in which, he told me that he was going to fill in for me on that weekend. When I asked, why he would want to work for me on that weekend, he simply told me that it would allow him the opportunity to stay away from his “mother-in-law” who was coming to visit his wife on that weekend. Needless to say, I didn’t say a word after learning the reason from my co-worker because I also know how difficult the “mother-in-laws” can really be sometimes!

Anyway, I did everything, I could, to enjoy the weekend, which included visiting some of my close relatives who I hadn’t seen in a long time. I also watched some of my favourite and old movies with my family. Apart from that, I spent a whole afternoon doing some shopping in order to buy myself some fashionable and trendy clothes. All in all, it was a terrific weekend for me.

I remember this weekend, mainly because it allowed me to spend some quality time with my family members and relatives in a very relaxing mood which happens with me only on some rare occasions. I remember it also because it allowed me to freely roam around outside and do the things without feeling the stress of work after a long, long time.

Describe a time when you gave someone directions to a place/location.

You should say:

·         when it was

·         whom you gave the directions

·         how you gave directions

and explain if the person was happy about it.

Technology has revolutionised the way we do things, including how we pick our holiday destinations, navigate on the road, arrange a hotel and even find a location. 'GPS' and 'Google Maps' types technology make it absolutely easy to find a location and yet I often find myself in situations when I end up giving directions to others or sometimes asking for directions.

So, it was about four months ago when I went out in one evening to walk in a park as part of my daily exercise. On my way to the park, a medium-built, thirty-something man, who was walking from the opposite direction of mine, suddenly stopped and asked me how he could go to the 'Vista Residential Area'. After I gave him directions to this place, he told me his name. Unfortunately, I no longer remember his name now. But I clearly recall that he was nicely dressed, and didn't seem like a local resident to me.

When he asked for the directions, I realised that he was heading to a different block than he was supposed to. I gave him the bad news, and I asked him to cross the road using the nearest foot-overbridge, and walk along the right-side street for around 15 minutes before crossing two intersections to reach the block he was looking for. I finally mentioned that his desired place would be just 3/4 lanes away from the entrance gate where he could find a large supermall. I also told him about a few prominent landmarks on his way to the destination. I did not forget to advise him that instead of doing all these, he could call a taxi and just tell the driver his destination.

Well, from his facial expression, I felt that he was happy about the directions I gave, or at least that's what I assumed! But it is hard to tell if he had been able to find his destination easily or not. I hope it had been easy for him as it seemed to me that he was eagerly looking to reach that place.
