A PICNIC PARTY
A picnic can be defined as “going
out for joy and recreation.” In this hurly-burly world of tumult and turmoil,
people become dull in soul and drab in spirit. Round the clock they are
engrossed in materialistic pursuits. They feed their big bellies but do nothing
for their vexed souls. They have confined themselves to the small stinging
nooks of the houses or the offices. They toil from dawn to dusk to make loads of
money. Life has become flat, boring and monotonous for them. They spend no time
to enjoy a fresh nutritious breath. They have no time to spend in the company
of balmy nature. They do not bother to enlighten their souls and illumine their
brains. They have become almost unresponsive, insensitive and apathetic about
beauty, grace and glamour. They have lost their taste for aestheticism. They
find nature to be dull in soul and drab in colour. In such a grim situation, an
excursion proves to be an amazing antidote to counter the venomous effects to
tedium and ennui.
I, like men of today, live a busy
hectic life but I do spare some time for the enlightenment of my soul. Here
follows how I enjoyed my last picnic. A few days ago, my friends and I chalked
out a program to spend the coming Sunday on the bank of the river fascinated us
so much that we finalized the program in a trice. The anxiously awaited Sunday
brought feverish activity with it. As we were to proceed early, everyone was
enthusiastically eager to be in time. All the preparations were made within no
time we all started off on our faces. We were no less happy than Wordsworth
when he entered the enchanted valley
of Race down. I started singing his beautiful verses.
It was a pleasant ride. All were
highly excited and delighted. In half an hour we reached our destination.
We placed our things under a huge
shady tree. Within no time, we put on the life jackets and jumped into the
river. It was a pure joy to swim in the cool water of the river. The light drizzle
from the silvery clouds, the cool breeze, the fragrance of the blooming flowers
on the bank of the river, the slow moving boats of the fishermen along the
downstream had a magical effect on us. We spent a long time in the river. When
we got exhausted, we came out of the river and pounced upon the ripe mangoes.
We ate mangoes with great relish. One of us began singing. We started playing
cards and chess. One of our friends told us many jokes which made us laugh. As
we were tired, we lay down to take a rest. After sometime when we gathered
strength, we rushed towards the water again to have another dip. We started the
competition of diving, swimming and rowing. It was a marvelous adventure. Soon
we all felt hungry again. We came out of the water and began to enjoy a
delicious dinner. We ate our fill. After that we turned on the music player.
Then we started singing songs. Everyone sang a song of his own choice. We
played cards and chess for sometime. When we were tired, we again lay down to
take a rest. As we all were absolutely exhausted. We drifted off to sleep.
Suddenly there was a great crash of thunder. All woke up. Lighting was flashing
in the sky. We began to wrap our luggage. Suddenly it began to rain cats and
dogs. The thick sheet of heavy rain had obscured the whole view. We rode home
in the pouring rain of summer. This was really a wonderful day to be cherished
in our memory and recounted with pride.
MY HERO IN HISTORY
Hero is a man of sky-high
personality with an exemplary character, distinctive deeds and ingenious ideas.
He must be a man of exceptional qualities of heart and mind, unparalleled
vigour, matchless genius and unique talent. He must posses the charismatic
qualities of an inspiring leader to lead his people to their ultimate destiny
despite whatever grave difficulties may hinder his way to success. The Muslim
history is rep;ete with great leaders of marvelous achievements. Our national
poet, Allama Muhammad Iqbal is one of the bright stars of this galaxy. He was
really a man worthy of the title ‘hero’.
It was the historic day of 9
November.1877 when Allama Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot . After the accomplishment of his
primary education in his native city, an unquenchable thirst for learning
brought him to Lahore .
He did his M.A in philosophy there, taught for sometime in the Government College . Then he went abroad, did his
Phd, and returned home. It was the time when the British ruled the
subcontinent. The English with all their craftiness and trickery, were making
utmost efforts to confine the Muslim to the stinking cages of slavery and
ignorance. Iqbal, whose heart was a new spirit in the dormant and sluggish soul
of the Muslims. Through his lofty verses, he indomitable fervour into the
indolent outlook of the Muslims but also, by his inspiring epistles, urged
Muhammad Ali Jinnah to struggle for the freedom of Indian Muslims.
In the annual session of the
Muslim League at Illahabad in 1930, he obviously manifested the solution to the
discontent of India
and suggested a sure means to secure peace and quiet for the nations inhabiting
there. His speech, in this session, reveals his concern for the welfare and
prosperity of his Nation. He pointed out that the status of the Muslim is
distinct and separate from those of other nations. He proved that the Muslim
community evolves a broader philosophical concept of the universe which in
non-temporal and non-spatial in its nature.
It is an undeniable fact that his
heroic and philosophical poetry has won him the title of ‘ The poet of the
East’. In this respect, he can be compared with Milton and Wordsworth who are
also ‘laureate poets’ of their nation. His innate poetic genius was perhaps
more marvelous than that of Calliope. His musical knack was perhaps more melodious
than of Orpheus. The distinctive feature of Iqbal’s poetry is that it is a
permanent source of joy, inspiration and didacticism. It has an irresistible
urge for national sentiments.
His lofty verses, noble poetic
instances, melodious songs for children and religious poetry have won him
immortal fame placing him among the brightest constellations of immortal poets
in the firmament of poetry. His poetry both in Urdu and Persian is replete with
the verses of the Holy Qur’an. Some critics have asserted to this extent that
his poetry is the true appreciation and interpretation of the holy Qur’an. So,
his poetry is an illustrious and distinctive source of enlightenment and
spiritual illumination for the gone-astray people.
In this age, when the Muslims are
being dishonoured and slaughtered every where, it is a pressing need that we
should get guidance and inspiration from his poetry. If we appreciate his
message and follow his advice, we may regain our lost glory. Iqbal has
persistently urged the Muslim youth to ponder over the heroic achievements of
their forefathers and follow the golden traditions set by them. May the Muslims
of new Millennium be inspired by the illuminated thoughts of his poetry! Ameen
MY HOBBY
Today, man lives in a world where
struggle and effort is necessary for survival. He has to toil from dawn to
dusk. Physical and mental exertion leave him utterly exhausted and enervated
after the whole day’s work. The constant drudgery of daily routine life rusts
his talent and efficiency. He needs some pleasant activity to lighten this
burden of monotony. He needs leisure and idle sours to soothe his perturbed
feelings and troubled soul. Different people do different things to this
effect. Tough there are various things I do at the moments of leisure but the
things that attracts all of my attention is gardening. Francis Bacon in his
essay “Of Garden” “says,” God Almighty first planted a garden. And, indeed, it
is the purest of human pleasure’. Thus, this hobby of mine is an ultimate
source of pleasure and joy for me.
Hobby is an activity that one
does at spare time for the sheer sake of delight and recreation. It invigorates
both our body is a felicitous activity to refresh body and brain. I live in a
big city where life is too much mechanical, dull and dreary. It is void of
peace, serenity, calm and quiet. I often desire to do some recreational
activity to get rid of this tedious and boring life-style. For this purpose, I
have planted mango, lemon, orange and banana trees. There, I grow flowers of
various kinds. They present a bright, colourful and vivid scene and spread a
sweet aroma all around. Green fruit trees, lush grassy lawn and the thick
mistletoe covering the front wall of my house enhance the beauty of my house
and add colours to the surroundings. The clean brown soil of the beds of
flowers presents a sharp contrast to the lush green of the garden. The trunks
of the trees have been white-washed approximately up to four feet. Green leaves
‘Fluttering and dancing in the breeze’ and the “happy, happy boughs: that
cannot shed ---- leaves, nor ever did the spring adieu” impart a soothing
effect to the eyes. A little fountain has been built in the heart of lawn. When
it sprinkles its light shower, it looks fascinating. Then the water of the
fountain flows subterraneously to the beds of flowers and trees. The soft, tidy
and trimmed grass of the lawn looks like a green velvety floor. It looks
sparkling when the rays of sunlight are reflected from the pearl-like dewdrops
lying upon the lush grass at dawn. Briefly speaking, the lawn and the garden of
my house are so attractive that they are the persuasive poof of my devotion and
dedication to my hobby.
I daily devote two hours for the
maintenance of the beauty and loveliness of my garden. I daily dig the beds,
sprinkle water over the trees and plants and sometimes apply manure to the
plants to enrich the growth of the garden, I have also placed flowerpots on
both sides of the gate and along the wall. These are properly looked after and
watered daily. There grows in them a variety of flowers. My garden is perfect
in all respects and I love to work and sit there, it has made my house a haven
of serenity and tranquility.
MY FIRST DAY AT COLLEGE
Sweet memories are like the
sweet-smelling flowers strewn on the strenuous path of life. Though they change
life into a blooming and balmy garden, the genuine wisdom is usually showered
on us from the dark clouds of painful past. The man who learns noting from
perturbing past should expect nothing from fragrant future because what is
bitter to bear may be rosy to remember. My first day at college is, no bit
bitter experience but it will ever shine in my mind’s eye like a smiling tear.
My first day at college is so
fresh in my memory that it seems to be a quite recent event. It never seems to
be an incident that happened years ago. It was a bright sunny morning of a
sweet-smelling spring. I with my friend was on my way to a new world of freedom
and learning. We all were wearing white suits. We were swelled with a great
pride. We were talking vividly. We were just a furlong off the college
premises. We saw some students rushing out of the college gate. They looking
horrified, their faces all pale and their hair quite disheveled. I could hardly
manage to stop one of them and asked him what had made them so scared. Our joy
and pride vanished in a trice when he told us that a group of senior students
was waiting of worn out shoes, rags, tattered robes, ink, insulting placards
saying insulting remarks, and other such equipments. As soon as we heard about
this socking situation, our jubilant faces turned pale. We felt like those
fresh flowers that suddenly begin to shed their pink petals on the lavish drift
of rain. We were stunned and dumbfound. We stuck to the ground as if the
magnetic power of earth had paralysed us from toe to top. All of a sudden, a
professor appeared there like a sudden surge of grace. We told him about the
grim situation. He smiled and encouraged us to face the situation like brave
people. He also escorted us to the college. He also escorted us to the college.
He left us in the corridor and made his way to the office. As soon as we were
alone, a group of senior students happened to some there. They tool full
advantage of the opportunity and herded us like cattle into the middle of a
playground. One of them ordered me to put on a tattered shirt. I obeyed him
without any resistance. Another boy came forward and displayed a placard on my
chest. A sketch of scarecrow had been drawn on it.
Another corpulent midget with a
garland of old shoes on his podgy hand advanced to a friend of mine who was
observing the situation very minutely. He did not let the senior student come
near him and took to his heels thus inviting the whole group of senior students
in pursuit. Seizing the opportunity, I took the rags off, threw the placard
away quickly and raced in the opposite direction. But as the fate drags the
ill-starred, my path ended at the brim of a field that was soggy with irrigation.
I paused for a moment and then terrified of the chasing party. I, willy-nilly,
sprung onto the sodden field and waded through. Though my feet sank into the
mud at every step, I managed to cross the field and was at a safe distance
soon.
My white dress was decorated with
the splashed of mud all over. I looked like an abstract work of art. The senior
students who chased me were roaring with laughter on the other end of the field
but I was happy to be safe from the grave risk. I walked approximately half kilometer
to reach the bank of a canal to wash my mud-stained clothed and body. I sat on
the bank of the canal and started washing my clothes. Suddenly, I heard an
outburst of laughter behind me. Horrified by the recent butter experience, I
thought that the senior students had reached there. I attempted to stand
quickly but slipped and fell into the canal.
To my good luck, the boys who had
come were not the senior student but my friends. By their assistance, I came
out of the canal. The condition of my friends was not different from mine.
Afterward, how we reached home is another story. This is a brief account of my
first day at college.
MY AIM IN LIFE
A profession is usually
considered a scale by which a man’s prosperity is estimated. It works like a
guiding star and a lighthouse top. It directs the gone-astray people to the
right direction and finally brings them to their destinations. It helps us to
focus our head and efforts on a particular target. It motivates us and compels
us to be diligent, honest and steadfast in our efforts. It makes us contented,
cheerful, prosperous and rich. A good profession brings about peace and calm of
body and brain. While a wrong profession results in physical suffering and
mental agony. It mars the delight of body as well as of soul. Therefore one
should be very cautious in choosing a profession. There are heaps of
professions. Different people choose different professions lying before me
also. But I love to teach. Therefore I want to be a teacher in future.
Teaching is work of problems,
priests, saints and moralists. I have got a good temperament and taste for
teaching. It brings about profound happiness of soul and mind. It showers a
pleasing light of knowledge in the pitch dark of ignorance. It uplifts human
worth. All the prophets were teachers. They taught people good moral values.
Therefore it is a sacred profession. The best people are those who make others
useful citizens. As a good mother rears good children, a teacher builds up a
good nation. Therefore, I want to be a teacher in future.
This profession is according to
my taste and temperament. I am fit this profession. By adopting this
profession, I would be able to increase my knowledge. I would ever read fine
and fascination books. I would also build up an extensive library for this
purpose. I would study, examine and analyses the education system of the
developed countries. I would endeavour to inculcate their excellent educational
qualities into our education system. In this way, we would be able to adopt
what is good and appreciable in their educational system.
I know that teaching not a
well-paid job. All over the world teachers are low-paid. But that does not
matter much. I do not want to be a moneybags. I know that there are other
professions that pay a good deal. They bring fame and fortune as well. But I
like teaching for other things. I like it for its sacredness, simplicity,
sincerity and service of humanity. I love it for the sake of it.
I love teaching for it helps a
teacher to establish very sacred relations. These are the relations between a
teacher and his students. The students are just like children for teacher. He
feels fatherly affection for all his pupils. He feels proud of training some
persons who are useful for their nation and the country. He feels pleased with
being respected, honoured and loved by his students. Whenever he sees any of
his students doing something exceptional he feels proud. He takes pride in the
achievements of his pupils. This is a great feeling. No amount of wealth can be
alternative to this sentiment. It is a feeling of being important and useful.
After deciding what I should be,
I devote all of my energy and time for the accomplishment of my aim. I study
good books day and night to increase my knowledge. I believe that a teacher
must be an encyclopedia in his person. He must have a comprehensive knowledge
of his subject. The students may ask him any question at any time. And he
should be in position to answer their question in the most appropriate way.
A VISIT TO A HISTORICAL PLACE
Historical events, distinct works
of genius, wondrous achievements, admirable accomplishments and the cultivation
of human art collectively constitute the culture of a nation. Pakistani
culture, though replete with all these distinctive qualities, is remarkably
exceptional for its brilliant historical heritage. The most startling and
spectacular characteristic of our culture is the enviable presentation of the
Muslim Architecture. The historical places in Pakistan are a prominent emblem of
the Muslim Culture.
Last summer, my friends and I
sketched out a program to visit the historical places of Lahore . As we were to set forth from Multan in the scorching
heat of summer, we decided to travel by an air-conditioned couch. We packed our
luggage, hurried with hysterical haste to the bus station, got on the bus
eagerly at about 10 am and reached Lahore
in the twilight. We rented a well-furnished room in a hotel and after a
superbly delicious dinner, we enjoyed a deep sleep. Next dawn, we got up with
much gusto. We decided to visit the tomb of Jahangir. Straightaway we were
ready to start off. In a hired taxi, we reached the elegant tomb in half an
hour. The four magnificent minarets of the tomb presented an exquisite view. A
high well and an elegantly decorated big gate guarded the mausoleum of the
great emperor. The tomb occupies the heart of a fragrant park. The park was
aromatically studded with colourful buds and blooming flowers. The fruit trees
were blossoming. Birds, perched on the twigs and boughs, were twittering.
Impressed by the ‘soft incense hanging upon the boughs’ and ‘many an
incense-bearing trees’ I began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:
In front of the grand tomb, a
lovely fountain was sprinkling its light shower. The drizzling of hoary drops
of the fountain was producing resonance of ultimate excellence. Summing up in
the words of S.T. Coleridge, it was ‘ A savage place….. holy and enchanted’.
Soon afterwards, we entered the
majestic edifice of Mughal Art containing the sepulcher of the emperor. What a
life of luxury and opulence he had enjoyed; but now he was lying desolate and
deserted in the sheer calm of infinity.
The walls of the room were
adorned with floral and mosaic designs. There were curious colourful patterns
signifying the mystery of death. We offered ‘Fatiha’ and prayed to God to be
Merciful and Beneficent to the departed soul. As a whole, the building is a
marvelous specimen of Muslim architecture, unique and matchless in its beauty
and structure.
We came up to the terrace and had
a view of Lahore
from there. It was a startling sight. The cool breeze, a canopy of silvery
clouds over our heads and the prevailing aroma of the blooming flowers made the
panorama so charismatic that it had lasting impact on our memory. We spent the
rest of our time in eating meal, dinking tea and making some of the sketches of
the floral designs we had just observed in the vast chamber of the bomb. When
the brightness of the day faded into the descending dusk, we hesitatingly
headed of death. We all agreed with Shakespeare:
SCIENCE IN THE SERVICE OF MAN
Science is a persistent pursuit
of knowledge, skill and enlightenment. It reveals sheer truths, mere facts and
bare realities of the universe. It is based on an unbiased observation of the
fundamental laws of nature. By its permanent quest, it has opened up new and
novel horizons of discovery and invention. Its enormous impact on agriculture,
industry, medicine, astronomy, navigation and travelling is exceedingly amazing.
It has proved to be the most trusted and entertaining friend of humanity. It
has doubled and multiplied human efficiency and comfort by its vast range of
application and innumerable inventions. It is human nature to explore new
horizons of nature. Man explores the undiscovered and unseen recesses of nature
to satiate his unquenched thirst for knowledge. Man will always continue to
discover new and novel aspects of cosmos. And it is science that helps man to
accomplish such pursuits. Life is a constant for survival where man has to toil
unceasingly to provide himself with the basic facilities of life. In the past,
man had sweat blood to meet his simple needs. His life was quite uncertain and
unsafe. He had to struggle for food, shelter and security. He had to defend
himself against the wild beasts and the odds of life. Now he has invented
lethal weapons to defend himself and his country. With the help of science, he
had succeeded in securing a safe home for him. There is no need of digging
holes in the earth to live in. Man has built skyscrapers and graceful buildings
for this purpose. Even in house, women needs not work with her hands. She has a
spacious decorated house, a well-furnished kitchen and numerous equipments to
do her domestic duties. As far as food is concerned, man grows all kinds of
crops and vegetables throughout the year. He is no more afraid of hunger and
famine. He has invented huge and reliable machines to perform his task in the
fields. These machines do his work with magical quickness and accuracy.
In the past, man had to travel on
foot. Now travel was become a pleasure for him. Swift and reliable means of
travel are easily available. He can travel around the world just for pleasure.
He has got the better of birds in flying. We are no more grieved to say
good-bye to our relatives and friends. We can meet them and visit them whenever
we like. Man has invented more speedy aeroplanes than sound. By them he can
cover long distances in the twinkling of an eye. Aeroplanes, trains, buses, cars
and taxis all are available to carry him anywhere across the country. All these
quick means of transportation are the result of science.
Science has provided us with many
means of information, entertainment, amusement and fun. TV, Radio VCR, Dish
antenna, Cinema and Computer all are sure means of entertainment and
recreation. The computer and other prompt means of transmission have converted
the whole world into a global village. Now man can enjoy any kind of activity
being performed thousands of miles away around the world.
Science has performed wonders in
the field of medicine. The diseases like tuberculosis, small pox and cholera
are no more fatal and deadly. Now plague and epidemics have been controlled.
Wonderful drugs have been discovered to relieve man of pain and disease.
Antiseptics can kill the germs that it has given man a scientific outlook and
rational approach to comprehend the mystic phenomena of nature. In the field of
surgery, science is touching the zenith of progress.
In short, science is a great
blessing which has proved to be useful in all field of life. It has brought all
the nations one platform. This age of illumination is different from the age of
darkness only because of science. Science has even enlightened us spiritually as
it has broadened our views and outlook. We have begun to perceive the laws and
the phenomena of nature adequately.
AN ACCIDENT
Accident can be defined as ‘a
sudden detrimental happening not necessarily but mostly triggered by human recklessness
violating the immutable natural laws’. Life is uncertain, fleeting and
unpredictable in its nature. Man is exceedingly conscious to adopt adequate
measures for his security and safety but in spite of his efforts and struggle,
he cannot escape from the clutches of ‘Nature red in tooth and claw’. We daily
observe accidents of various kinds occurring at different places all around the
world. Thousands of people lose their precious lives in these accidents and
many others are crippled for life. Perhaps this surging stream of human blood
is not enough to satiate the unquenchable thirst of furious Fate. As
Shakespeare says:
Accidents are always pathetic,
distressing and heart-rending. The accident I am going to narrate is tragically
terrible. Once, my friends and I made a program to spend a few days in the
comforting company of nature in Swat
Valley . The preparations
were finalized within two days. On the third day, we started off our journey at
dawn. All of us were excited and thrilled about our adventure. The journey to Peshawar was tremendously
tiresome, as we had to travel in the scorching heat of summer. After having a
brief rest at Peshawar ,
we decided to proceed immediately to our destination. We hired a jeep and after
a couple of hours were creeping on the scary road of Malakand Pass.
The scenery around was amazingly captivating and mesmerinzing. Lush green trees
and flowery bushes were growing in abundance on the slopes of hills. Thin
fleece-like clouds floating in the sky were playing hide and seek with the sun.
cool gentle breeze was blowing from the green hills. It fanned our faces and
lifted our spirits. The road winding around the cliffs looked somewhat scary.
But the sensations of excitement made the journey pleasant and delightful.
We were entirely absorbed in that
magical scenery when the deafening noise of the horns of two buses brought us
back to our world. The two buses overtook us at breakneck speed. The reckless
drivers did not know that they were engaged in a death-race. All of a sudden, a
truck appeared from the curve of a cliff and collided with one of the buses.
There was a loud bang and the vehicles jammed into each other. The second fast
flying bus also crashed against them and the three vehicles rolled down the
slope at a terrific speed into the deep gorge below. It was a horribly
harrowing scene. The heartbreaking shrieks of the ill-starred passengers echoed
back from the hills. We got down the jeep quickly and rushed to the spot to
help to help the passengers but the download slope was so steep that no one
could get down to the vehicle below. After a desperate struggle, we managed to
approach the place where these vehicles were lying utterly smashed. No one had
survived. All the passengers had died then and there. Their blood-stained
bodies were lying around. No one was found sobbing and crying. It was a
terrible sight. Human flesh and blood was visible on the arid stones all
around. Every one was horror-stuck. The shock crippled all of us. Neither could
we speak nor move nor cry. Soon the police and the district administration
arrived to take away the corpses. We could stand it no longer. We cancelled our
programme and returned with heavy hearts.
The effect of that accident was
so shocked that whenever I recollect this regrettable accident I become deeply depressed.
May the departed souls be blessed with eternal joys of heaven! Aameeen. (588

Co-education
Co-education is a system of
education in which students of both the sexes receive their education in the
same classrooms, School, college, faculty or university. The idea of
co-education in our country has become a controversial issue. The supporters of
this system of education heap up big arguments in its favour. They advocate its
practice at large scale. While another group of people considerate a lethal
weapon against our golden Islamic and social traditions.
A heated argument given in favour
of this system is that our country is a developing country. The economy of our
country is fragile. Our resources are not substantial enough to stomach the
expenses of separate educational institutions for boys and girls particularly
at high level. Therefore, we should adopt co-education at least at high level
of studies. It would help us to reduce our educational expenses.
Second, this system promotes
fierce competition in studies between boys and girls. It arouses a passion for
work in them. The girls endeavour to beat the boys and vise verse. It is due to
this stiff competition that the students demonstrate uncanny skills in
learning.
Third, co-education promotes
character building activities among students. It helps them to have their
character larger-than-life. They become sensible and sagacious. They learn how
to subdue their emotions of libido and cultured. They learn to respect girls
and treat them with a polite but rather distant chivalry. On the other hand,
the girls develop a kind of confidence and poise. They become less weak, timid
and bashful. In this way, both succeed in creating a pleasant and peaceful
environment for education. Their mutual discourse helps them to appreciate each
other.
Another persuasive argument
presented in favour of co-education is that in present era, no society can
afford to confine their women within the walls of house. When women have to
participate in social setup, why should they not be prepared for that earlier?
And for this training no place is better than the educational institutes.
On the other side, there are
those who oppose this system of education. They opine that the supporters of
this system are given to self-education. They analyse the social system of
those countries where co-education is in vogue, we come to know thath the
golden traditions of honour and nobility no more exist there. Instead, the
young boys and girls fall prey to the uncontrollable passions of lust and
lechery. In this way the educational institutions become the showgrounds of
debauchery. This is why many girls at high school level in Europe and America become
unmarried mothers.
There are countless sex
attractions in human body. A young human figure with all its beauty, charms,
appearance and style attracts the opposite sex, and particularly, in youth
people are attracts to the affairs of heart. They do not use their brains.
Moreover, the young students lack maturity and discernment. If they could enjoy
opportunity of spending sometime in the company of opposite sex, it becomes
hard for them to suppress their passions. So free mixing of both the sexes,
instead of creating a poise of mind, makes them restless. What should be result
of this restlessness? Study or sex?
The purpose of education is to
prepare the youth for life. Man and women are two wheels of the vehicle of
life. No doubt, they should move onward at the same speed and in the same direction.
Therefore, both should be trained and educated equally for the prosperity of
the nation and the country/ but it is obviously unjust to form a pretext of
co-education from this need. The problems of a woman are different from those
of man. Therefore, the syllabus for women should be different from that for
men. Moreover the natural faculties of both the sexes are largely different.
The nature of their responsibilities is different. Therefore, they should not
be taught the same syllabus in the same institution.
In fact, co-education is a
western concept in its nature and application. Its main purpose is to end the
modesty and nobility of women by persuading them to join the gaiety of the
club. So, the education that deprives them of their honour should be checked
with an iron hand. Most important of all, our religion Islam does not allow the
free mixing of boys and girls. The sum up, co-education is not good for any
society and particularly for an Islamic. Therefore, separate institutions
should be set up for both sexes.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Processing and distribution of
data through computers, telecommunications and digital electronics is called
information Technology. This is an age of IT. The world had changed into a
global village. Easy access to all kinds of data across the world is the fruit
of IT. This is the most leading technology of the present age. The followings
are the means that are used in IT.
Computer is the most important
equipment used in IT. The computer is a simple machine, rather a collection of
simple machines, some electronic and some mechanical, whose activities are
coordinated by a central control unit. These machines can read information,
store this information for later use, and issue results in a form understandable
by human operators. Mother Board, Processor, RAM, Monitor, Key Board, CD ROM,
and Floppy Derive are the main components of the computer.
The most remarkable features of a
computer are speed, versatility and accuracy. As life has become speedy and
quick, the importance of computer has been multiplied. It is being used in
every sphere of life. In industry, it keeps a record of goods, cost and output.
It provides a great deal of help in engineering. It designs buildings of all
kinds, gives information about the best material to be used, suggests ideal
measures for its safety and gives accurate expenditures on its construction. In
medicine, it assists to perform various tests, diagnoses diseases and
prescribes medicine. In space, sea and earth explorations, it has performed
wonders. It collects information of various heavenly bodies, their properties,
and atmospheric conditions. It tells us about the treasures hidden deep within
the Earth’s crust and in the depth of the sea. We control satellite, rockets,
missiles, and spaceships by computer. In the field of education it has
performed wonders. It collects information for us from the most remote parts of
the world.
Data Processing is the analysis
and organization of data by using one or more computer programmes. It is widely
used in business, engineering, science and many other fields. Data processing
is of two kinds i.e. database processing and transaction processing. A database
is a collection of common records stored in a computer. It can be searched, accessed
and modified. Bank account records are the examples of such a data. Transaction
processing refers to the sharing of data between computers. In this process one
computer can access the data stored in other computers. For this purpose, a
network is needed that connects many computers.
Internet is global information
system. It works through many interconnected computer networks. Each network
may link tens, hundreds, or even thousands of computers. These computers share
information with one another. The internet has enabled people all over the
world to effectively communicate with one another. They make information
available to others, find information provided by others.
The internet has impressed new
opportunity to government, business, and education. Governments use internet
for internal communication and distribution of information. Businesses offer
goods and services to customers. Many people use internet for shopping, paying
bills and online banking. Educational institutions use the internet for research
purposes. They also deliver courses to student at remote areas.
Telecommunication means the
sending and receiving of messages over distances. It consists of devices and
systems that transmit electronic signals across long distances. The common
devices of telecommunications are telephone, radio and television.
Telecommunication enables people around the world to contact one another, to
access information instantly, and to communicate from remote areas.
WHY I LOVE PAKISTAN
Patriotism is a fiery fountain
from which springs the sweet stream of love. It is the fervent fondness for
one’s country, nation, traditions, laws and even land. It is an allegiance to
the country’s constitution, government, people and institutions. No doubt, a
man becomes emotionally attached to the lace where he lives. So, patriotism is
a natural passion. I also love my country passionately.
I love my country for its
ideology. Probably, this is the only state in the world that was established on
the basis of some ideology. Pakistan
is an Islamic democratic state. It was created in the name of Islam. Its
constitution is totally based on Islamic principles. It is regarded as a sacred
citadel of Islam. It is sanctuary where we feel safe and protected. The Muslims
feel free to follow the footsteps of their forefathers.
I love my country for its people.
It is the place of great men. It is the place where Qauid-e-Azam had lived. It
is the place where the great religious scholars like ‘Data Gang Bukhsh, Khawaja
Ghulam Fareed, and Baba Bhulle Shah’ had lived. It is the place where great
poets like Hafeez Jalindhari, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Majeed Ahmad had breathed
their last. It is the place of great warriors who sacrificed their lives for
its defence. And then it is the place where Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan lives. May
Allah bless him with sound health!
I love my country for its
beautiful scenery, golden traditions and fertile fields. It is a land of
forested valleys, might mountains, fast-flowing rivers, surging streams, lush
green fields, fruitful flowery gardens, beautiful landscape, substantial
resources and thriving industries. It is the land of long-standing culture,
time-honoured traditions, solemn rituals and long-established customs. It is
the land of ancient civilization. Mohunjodaro, Harapar and Texila are known for
their ancient heritage, antique traces and primal relics.
I love my country for its natural
resources. Oil, coal, natural gas, marble, precious stones, and many types of
minerals are found here. Its villages possess immense rural charms and natural
beauty. Its cities sparkle with colourful gala and festivity. It glows with
natural and man-made brilliance. Its cities are teeming with educational
institutions, hospitals, offices, boar roads, high-speed railways, large airports,
shopping plazas, big bazaars and public parks. Its villages are surrounded by
tall trees, fertile fields, rural landscape, fruitful gardens and bubbling
streams. All basic facilities could be enjoyed in rural areas here.
I love my country for its
democratic culture, legal code and jurisprudence. Here the situation of law and
order is stable. People are prosperous and well-off. The policies of the
government are always prone to facilitate the masses. The strict discipline in
the public offices, availability of cheap and instant justice, ample
opportunities for employment, social security benefits for the people, free
medication, the first-class education and other such appreciable facilitate are
available in my country.
As I love my country, I have devoted
all of my time for its prosperity and welfare. I am determined to propagate the
ideology of Pakistan
in the circle of my friends and acquaintances. May my efforts result in
success.
UNEMPLOYMENT
Unemployment means the joblessness
of those who are able and willing to work. The proportion of unemployed people
displays the index of economic activity. Its ratio shows how human resources
are being used. As the unemployed people feel deprived and rejected, it is a
worldwide problem. The number of unemployed workers is constantly on the
increase.
Economists have categorized the
causes of unemployment as frictional, seasonal, structural, and cyclical.
Frictional unemployment arises
when workers try to seek such jobs as may fit their ability and taste. Friction
in this case refers to the incongruity between the workers and the job
available. A worker may give up his old job and try to look for a new one.
Sometimes, it takes time to find a new suitable job. The amount of frictional
unemployment depends on the frequency with which workers change jobs and the
time it takes to find new ones. This type of unemployment can be reduced
somewhat by providing the workers with a variety of suitable jobs. However,
some frictional unemployment will always be present.
Seasonal unemployment occurs when
industries have a slow season. Ours is an agricultural country. In the crop
season, new jobs are created. Particularly in cotton season, cotton factories
are run. Then workers are employed there. But after the cotton season is over,
the factories are closed and the workers are unemployed. Thus seasonal
unemployment occurs.
Structural unemployment arises
from an imbalance between the kinds of workers wanted and the kinds of workers
available. The imbalances may be caused by lack of skills, location, or
personal likes and dislikes. New rapid developments are taking place in
technology. This necessitates new skilled workers in industries. Thus
industries employ new workers skilled in the respective development. As a
result, the old workers who have outdated skills are left without a job.
Sometimes, a plant in a declining industry is closed. It throws the workers out
of work. Sometimes, a plant is shifted to another place. The workers who are
unable or unwilling to move to the area are left jobless. The workers with
inadequate education, skills or training cannot get jobs. The employees think
that they cannot produce more than their wages. Sometime highly trained workers
are left jobless. This happens when the number of workers exceeds the number of
jobs available in those fields. For example you cannot appoint an engineer at
the post of a typist. Sometime, the employees do not appoint the trained
workers on the basis of sex, race or religion though the vacancies are lying
vacant Cyclical unemployment results from a general lack of demand for labour.
When the business cycle turns downward, demand for goods and services drops;
the workers are laid off.
Solution of the problem:
Unemployment is not a petty
problem in its nature. It is a very grave and knotty problem. It hinders the
smooth running of a country. It can cause intractable social problems and
massive corruption. Therefore, it should be tackled before it paralyzes the
whole structure of society. The following steps can be of tremendous help in
this regard. First of all the education system should be modified. The present
system is producing such educated men as are good for nothing. They are not
skilled and technically trained. To make the situation even worse, they expect
cushy jobs. They do not accept menial jobs and, therefore, remain unemployed.
The government should introduce such system of education as may produce skilled
workers. In this regard, vocational and technical institutes should be opened.
Second, new industries should be set up to create more opportunities for
employment. Third, the government should help the jobless educated people with
substantial debts on easy terms so that they may start their own business.
Fourth, steps should be taken to control the population. Fifth, cottage
industry should be promoted in towns and villages. If these steps are taken,
the problem of unemployment may be alleviated.
AN IDEAL
STUDENT
A student is one who wants to get
knowledge. He studies the objects of nature. He meditates on the universe to
discover more and more. Though man has learnt a lot, the struggle for discovery
is not yet over. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w) said that every person should get
knowledge from the lap of his mother till death. Thus, there is no end to
knowledge.
The first quality of an ideal
student is that he should be study in his research. He should work to learn
more and more. The student who is not consistent in his quest cannot be
successful. The ideal student should be industrious. He should not lose heart
in difficulties. He should be firm in his aims. He should cover long distances,
cross vast deserts and patience of job and the willpower of Noah.
The ideal student should be a man
of character. The object of education is to spread politeness and good manners.
He should be virtuous and honest in his dealings. He should be kind and
generous to others.
The ideal student should be meek
and humble. He should not be proud of his knowledge. He should respect his
teachers and the fellow students. Knowledge teaches humbleness not pride.
The ideal student must enjoy good
health. He should not be a book-worm. He should take part in physical
activities as well. It is said that a sound body possesses a sound mind. A good
student should be a good debater, a first-rate player, and a fine athlete. He
should participate in all good activities.
The ideal student also proves to
be a good citizen. He is always helpful to his country fellows. He loves the
ideology of the country. He never breaks law for his personal gains. He proves
himself a true patriot. He loves his country, culture, and traditions.
The ideal student should show
discipline in every field of life. He should follow the three principles told
by the founder of Pakistan .
‘Faith, Unity, and Discipline’. He should lead a planned life. He should
observe the codes of ethics and discipline. He should not be reckless and
careless in his doings. He must be balanced and rational in his attitude.
PLEASURE OF COLLEGE LIFE
In our country most of the young
boys romanticize college life. A college is taken for a symbol of infinite
liberty, luxury, enjoyment and adventure. Only a few students enter college to
learn something. Most of the students get admission to avail themselves of the
freedom found there. But there are certain students who are serious in their
studies. They are hard working. They have lofty and sublime aims. Some students
of this category intentionally avoid the pleasures of college life. We find few
students who enjoy college life as well as studies and get positions.
College is a place full of
fanciful dreams and glamour. When a teenager enters a college he or she thinks
himself or herself and outstanding figure of society. It is simply because of
the charms, attractions and pleasures of college life.
First of all, the students enjoy
the changed atmosphere and attitude. A college student is mature enough to
compare school life with college life. He sees the kind and generous attitude
of professors while the behaviour of school teachers was always harsh and
insulting. A college pleases students in a number of ways.
They wear clean clothes and
polished shoes. A student feels himself free from all bindings and fetters. He
avails himself of all the opportunities and feels relaxed. Another pleasure of
college life is vast range of co-curricular activities. Students get better
chances to study library books. They may ask learned professors about anything.
And in this way, they may quench their thirst for knowledge without difficulty.
Quiz programs, various competitions in the field of Qirat, Naat Khani, Debates,
poetry, games and athletics create competitive environment. A large number of
clubs, societies, associations and college union produce young leadership for
society. All these activities are a part of fun, pleasure, entertainment and
enjoyment. These inculcate the students with a sense of thrill and fervour.
Shakespeare has rightly said that
there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so. The same
quotations may be applied to those who spoil themselves in college. They are
absorbed in the intoxicating fancies of college life. They go beyond their aim
and are distracted from the real objective. They go astray and fall victim to aimlessness.
They should keep their eyes and mind open in order to learn and enjoy the real
pleasure of college life i.e. academic. If a student knows his rights and
duties, he can enjoy the pleasures of college as well as can get position in
his examination.
OUR EXAMINATION SYSTEM
Education makes life worth
living. A country without a proper system of education of education can make no
progress. Only the educated and skilled people can pave the way to progress.
For good education, an adequate system of examination is necessary.
Unfortunately, our system of examination is not satisfactory. It is replete
with faults.
The current system of examination
is such as tests the memory of the students. It is not affair test of
knowledge, understanding and comprehension. The questions asked in the
examination are not such as may promote the inborn faculties of students. The
usual practice among the students is to learn every thing by heart without
complete comprehension of it. This is practiced in the present system of
examination. Though the students pass the examination in this way, they cannot
develop their awareness greatly.
Furthermore, the method of
evaluation of scripts is faulty. Every examiner has his particular outlook, temperament
and a specified way of observation. Even the atmosphere affects the mood of
examiners. As a result, the assessment is somewhat personal and therefore
inaccurate. Moreover, the questions asked in the examination are-subjective;
they cannot be awarded exact marks.
In our country, the climate is of
extreme kind. The examinations take place usually in hot summer. The scorching
heat leads to several troubles. The student cannot concentrate fully on their
studies. They have to go to the examination hall in the scorching heat of
summer. Moreover, our academic terms are short because of extreme weather
conditions. Consequently, the students cannot read their course fully. This
also adds to the difficulties of the students in the examination.
I have some suitable suggestions
for the improvements of our examination system.
First, the examination should be
held in spring season so that the students may work in the pleasant weather
conditions. This will enable the students to focus their attention on studies.
This would also increase the length of the academic year. Second, the question
papers should be set in such a way as they should be a real test of the student
knowledge and insight.
Third, the declaration of result
should be prompt and quick. This will save the time of students. Even the
length of the academic term would be increase the passion for study among the
students. I hope that the government would take prompt steps in this regard.
MOBILE/CELLULAR PHONES
Mobile phone is also called ‘cell
phone’. It is a transmitter and a receiver combined in one unit. It works like
a portable or cordless telephone. Cell phones have become very popular with the
masses in this era.
The number of cell phone users is
increasing each year. In the beginning, the prices of mobile phones were fairly
high. Only a small group of big businesspersons could enjoy mobile phone
services. Then eventually, the providers reduced the prices of cell phones and
network access. Thus, cell phone service achieved a great commercial success.
The mobile phones have
revolutionized life. They have proved to be very useful and beneficial. They
ensure quick communication. They are performing wonders in the field of
business, culture, trade and commerce. They have sped up productivity. People
can contact each other whenever they want and whenever they are.
They mobile phones have improved
safety of people. Earlier people could contact police and other
security-officials only on wire-based phones. But if the wire was disconnected,
the telecommunication could result into serious damage. But now no such
obstacle could hamper the quick communication between the public and
security-officials. Now people feel safe at home, on the road or in deserts.
The mobile phones have made life
easy and pleasant. People call in the doctors or technicians on will. They have
not to go out in search of these persons. Sitting at home, they get their
things repaired, meals served and things done. This also saves their time thus
makes life comfortable.
Though the advantages of mobile
phones are many, their-wastage. Usually people are seen busy with playing
games, listening music, using internet sending messages and chatting for hours
on cell phones. Mobile phones have affected adversely our youth. The young
students instead of paying heed to their studies fall victim to the charms of
mobile phones and waste their time in useless activities.
The most fatal effect of cell
phones on our youth is that they are being derailed from the virtuous path of
life. They are falling prey to moral corruption. For whom are the free
mobile-service-packages after mid-night are they meant for businessmen, traders
or doctors? No, everyone is asleep at this hour of night except the devil
disciples, Moral decline. Illicit love and the revolt from our cultural
traditions are the only outcome of all such mobile-service-packages.
Mobile cells have become a
definite cause of lawlessness. Unregistered mobile connections have given rise
to criminal activities in society. At least 50% of crimes would come to a close
if only the unregistered mobile connections are cut off. Seneca, a Roman
philosopher says; ‘He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it’
Mobile phones are also a cause of
noise pollution. The loud ring tones disturb the public. The mobile calls
divert the attention of doers form their real focus. None could do his job with
full head if the mobile phone is not switched off. The government should force
the public to keep their mobiles on silent profile to prevent noise pollution.
Mobile phones have caused an
undue burden on the economy of the country. a huge portion of foreign exchange
is being spent on the import of mobile phones. This affects the productivity
and usefulness of foreign exchange.
All the above discussion reveals
the fact that mobile phones are a boon only for those who are in real need of
them i.e. businessmen, doctors, traders etc. but they are a curse for the poor
people and especially the young students.
AN IDEAL
TEACHER
Teaching is a well-planned
presentation of facts, ideas and skills to students. And the person who does
this is called a teacher. A teacher usually enjoys a noble status in society.
He is considered to be a model of decent values. He bears a flawless character.
He showers knowledge upon everyone. He instills great social and culture values
into humans. He works like a lighthouse. He emits bright beams of knowledge to
enlighten the gloomy hearts. Briefly speaking, a teacher plays a vital role in
the making of a nation.
The first quality of an ideal
teacher is that he appeals to the hearts and souls of the students. He urges
them to probe into their souls. He reveals that requires deep devotion and
great wisdom. Therefore, an ideal teacher helps his students to develop the
qualities of self-knowledge, and self-control and self-esteem.
An ideal teacher gives his
students an artistic vision. He arouses in them a strong passion for work and
knowledge. As a result, the students’ imagination burns into fames. They begin
to see beyond the bounds of heaven and earth. They become keen to see the
unseen. They become eager to discover the hidden treasures of knowledge.
An ideal teacher must be a
paragon of beauty that gives pleasure to the senses. A teacher without forceful
personality and decent manners is just like a barren land. Education without
good moral values is like a dry fountain. Therefore a teacher must bear a good
moral character. He must be a model for his students. They would certainly
follow his habits and manners.
And ideal teacher must have full
command of his subject. He must have a thorough knowledge and core skills of
imparting knowledge. Effective communication is the lifeblood of teaching
profession. The teacher must free-flowing discussion, a simple speech and a logical
presentation of ideas are the vital factors that make communication forceful.
And an ideal teacher must possess all these attributes. Pliny the younger, a
Roman politician and writer says ‘The living voice is that which sways the
soul.’
Briefly speaking, a teacher must
use great teaching techniques. He must prepare a well-organized lesson plan. He
must arrange tutorial groups. He must urge his students to take part in
co-curricular activities. He must make his students leading sportsmen, useful
citizens and great scholars. I end this article with the words of Henry Adams:
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops”.
